timberdoodle is a series of carpentry workshops designed by women for women. Held in downtown Toronto, these workshops aim to provide a safe place for women to share ideas and woodworking skills. timberdoodle seeks to empower women to use woodworking tools and techniques. We provide the tools and hopefully, the inspiration to open avenues that are often less accessible to women. Please note, although our workshops are geared towards women/womyn, we are also trans-inclusive.

Our first workshop is an introduction to woodworking which will cover the fundamentals: about wood, using tools, cutting, joining, and finishes. The idea is to give you a general understanding of building structures made out of wood and how to do it successfully. The goal is not necessarily to teach you how to build "X-project", but to give you the tools and know-how so that if you so wanted to build "X-project" or even a house, you can. Because really, it comes down to the same thing: fundamental skills and concepts.

What makes timberdoodle unique is in our use of recycled materials. We aim to build everything out of materials found at the curb side, in back alleys, construction site bins, online and "unwanted/useless" items hidden in your basement or attic. Participants will be taught how to disassemble found items, what to look for in found materials and what to consider when using found materials.

Ultimately, the goal is to build stuff and have fun!

  2011 NEWS

Unfortunately, Shanin, Jane and I, Ali, will not be offering our workshops this winter-spring season. We have been trying to secure a site to host the workshops but we have not been able to find a place that is suitable. It is the end of January as I update this, and it's getting a bit too late into the season.

We hope to offer the workshops again this coming winter. Please email us if you can propose a site or if you are interested in attending a future workshop.
